My brother and I were too busy playing a similar, card & dice baseball game: MLB Showdown. I actually never played the game with my Dad. Watching Marvel Movies? Would he be playing wiffle ball with me in the backyard at age 67? It shouldn’t be a surprise I’ve re-read all of my Dad’s old comics, re-hatched old photos and started to play Strat-O-Matic. I wonder what we would be doing together if he were around during quarantine. This is the first time I’ve been home for more than a few days since and it still feels… weird.
After college I moved to California to start my career in radio which then lead me to Louisiana before being laid-off, or “dislocated”, as part of iHeartMedia’s massive layoffs. My Dad passed way in 2011, while I was still in college and I’ve never spent a long period of length at home since. This time, my Mets won in 5 games behind a Tom Seaver 3-hitter in game 5. But many Marvel comics were strung together, they required knowledge of what happened in the previous issue or you needed the next issue to find out how the story ends, and I was looking up those missing issues. My Dad gave me his collection when I was in high school, two shoeboxes worth of issues that included The Avengers creation of Vision (the basis for Avengers 2: Age of Ultron), The issue where Loki turns Thor into a frog (as mentioned in Thor Ragnarok) and many issues of Spiderman, Captain America, Iron Man, X-Men, and Fantastic Four. I was looking up 1960s and 1970s issues of Marvel Comics on ebay. The rabbit-hole that got me to this point started at Midnight during a fit of insomnia.
